Municipal Authority of the Township of Robinson (MATR) –
High Pressure Water Transmission Main

Background and Goals
  • Filtration plant located 5 miles from and 600 feet below highest point in the system.
  • Main project goal was to improve transmission due to growing demands and reduce operating pressures of the distribution pumps.
Features
  • Obtained over 525,000 square feet of easements including several with the semi-public Montour Trail Council.
  • Installed 17,400 feet of 30-inch pipe capable of operations up to 350 psi with three (3) valve/air-release vaults, four (4) under-stream borings and six (6) wetland crossings.
Outcomes
  • Observed distribution pumps operating 30 psi lower.
  • Reduced volume of water losses and number of waterline breaks.
  • Attained flexibility to complete repairs while maintaining operations and to increase future transmission capacity.
  • Successfully disinfected; then dechlorinated and evacuated 640,000 gallons of heavily chlorinated water to meet strict water discharge requirements near a trout-stocked stream.
